Donation Processing Tasks

  • This role is available Monday and Thursday mornings. It involves sorting through donated clothing items, checking them for stains, rips, etc., and categorizing them according to given types. This role requires the ability to stand at a table for several hours, potentially lifting moderately weighted bags occasionally, and attention to detail. It is an entry-level role.

  • This role is available Tuesday and Friday mornings, and some Tuesday This role involves sizing clothes according to the size designations we use, then either hanging the items on hangers and placing them into the silos for families to select or storing the items in bins for future use.  This role requires attention to detail (checking for stains, rips, etc) and the ability to stand at a table for several hours.

  • This role is available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings.  This role involves sorting through various types of baby items- any small items a baby might need that are not clothing – checking the items for rips, stains, working condition, and storing them in the bins on the Resource Center floor for families to select. This task requires attention to detail, and it is helpful (though not required) to have some prior knowledge of baby items. This is an entry-level role. 

  • This role is available Mon, Tues, Thurs and Friday mornings.  The volunteer will be restocking the shelves in the toy department with toys that have already been checked and prepared to be displayed. This role requires significant training and knowledge of kid's toys.  You will work with Carrie to learn how to restock the toy area based on the types of toys and the ages they are developmentally appropriate for.  This is an entry-level role but requires significant training. description

  • This role is available Mon, Tues, Thur and Fri mornings.  This role requires going through the donated shoes, pairing them up using small clips, and storing them in their appropriate bins by  gender and size.  You will have to determine if the shoes meet the quality that Family Room requires, so judgment and attention to detail are required for this task. This is an entry-level role.

  • This role is available most days during open hours. Items that babies/children sit, stand or sleep in are checked to ensure they are safe and have not been recalled. It requires comfort with computers/internet searches, attention to detail, and having a good base knowledge of baby and children's items is helpful. This role requires significant training and must be 18 years old or older. This role is often paired with donation intake on Tuesdays and Saturday mornings. 

  • This role is available on Tuesdays all day, Thursday mornings, and Saturday mornings.  This role is often paired with donation intake. Items that have been checked for recall- like car seats, strollers, bathtubs, etc.- need to be thoroughly cleaned before being placed in the Resource Center for families to take home. Volunteers are supplied with all the cleaning supplies needed.  This role requires attention to detail and the willingness to get into the nooks and crannies of various items to clean. This is an entry-level role.

  • This role is available Tuesdays all day, and Saturday mornings.  Items that are donated new- diapers, hygiene products, formula, socks, underwear, etc- are stocked in various places in the donation center and resource center.  The volunteer is responsible for sorting through the items and taking them to their various locations to be stored.  This role requires going up and down stairs repeatedly and possibly carrying heavy items occasionally. This is an entry-level role.

  • This role is available on the fourth Saturday of each month between 10 AM and 1 PM. It requires sorting new donated grocery items, checking expiration dates on the groceries, and organizing them on the appropriate shelves. It also requires organization skills, the ability to place items on shelves, and the ability to read small print to check expiration dates. This is an entry-level role.

  • This role is available Mon, Tues, Thur, Frid and Sat mornings as well as Tuesday evenings.  This task requires checking expiration dates on the groceries and bagging sets of groceries for new placements according to a list provided. It requires organization skills and the ability to, as well as the ability to read small print to check expiration dates. This is an entry-level role.

  • This role is available Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday AM. This task involves going through clothing and other items set aside for teens, judging if they are appropriate for teens, and then either displaying the items or storing them in the stock room. It also involves keeping the teen space stocked and tidy, ready for teens to come in. It is helpful for someone who has significant experience with teens to do this task.

  • This task is available Tuesday all day and Saturday AM.  This task involves assembling items that have been donated to Family Room and have passed recall.  Mostly, this task involves assembling cribs, toddler, twin, and bunkbeds.  Often this involves a bit of detective work as directions are typically not provided and sometimes there are missing pieces/hardware.  This is an entry-level role but also significant prior experience with building furniture is helpful.

Background Check Required Tasks

  • This task is available on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings. It involves greeting families when they arrive, checking them in for their appointments using our computer-based appointment system, answering phone calls, and some data entry. Strong computer and people skills are a must for this task, as well as a deep understanding of Family Room—our values and operations—and therefore, this task is not an entry-level role.

  • This task is available on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings. It involves counting and bagging items the family has selected, filling out the checkout sheet, and sometimes retrieving new placement items for the families.  A check-out volunteer answers questions about item location and amounts provided.  Families will sometimes share information about their situation with check-out volunteers. This task requires strong people skills, compassion, and discretion regarding what is shared.  This task requires organization skills and attention to detail. Also, a deep understanding of Family Room- our values and operations- is required; therefore, this task is not an entry-level role.

  • This task is available on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings.  The volunteer responsible for serving families guides them around the Resource Center - showing them where the items they are looking for are located, helping them select items as needed, potentially making suggestions of items needed based on the situation, retrieving new placement items, and generally helping the families with any questions or concerns they have. This task requires strong people skills, significant experience with Family Room, compassion, and discretion as you will likely hear details about their placement to help the family get what they need.  This role requires advanced training with families and is not an entry-level role. 

  • This task combines the roles of serving families and check-out, but it is available every day of the week—all day long. This is an on-call role. It does require meeting families at Family Room without a staff member present, and as such, it requires significant training and trust. If you serve a new placement, you assist them as the lone representative of Family Room at the appointment. This role requires advanced training with families and is not an entry-level role.

  • This role is available Tuesdays from 9 AM to 7 PM in shifts and Saturday mornings.  This role requires helping with donations to Family Room.  You will be stationed near the garage door in the Donation Center and will greet donors as they drive up.  You will help unload their vehicles and place items in the appropriate places in the donation center.  This task involves periods of heavy lifting - sometimes several cars will be lined up to drop off items- intermixed with periods of downtime.  But it is important to stay available. This entry-level role requires strong people skills and the ability to lift and move heavy items at times.

  • This role is available most days during open hours. It requires skills with computer systems, attention to detail, and strong people skills. This role requires advanced training with families, a deep understanding of Family Room- our values and operations- is required therefore is not an entry-level role.

  • This role is available as needed and is on-call. This role requires access to a truck or large vehicle that items can be loaded into and unloaded from easily.  It is helpful to be capable of handling/lifting heavy items for this role.  This role is an entry-level role but does require some discretion on the part of the volunteer as they potentially will be coming into contact with families we serve.

  • This role serves directly with the Development Manager and is available most days during open hours, occasional nights and weekends for events. It requires skills with computer systems, attention to detail, and strong people skills. This role requires a deep understanding of Family Room- our values and operations- is required therefore is not an entry-level role. Phone calls, emails, cards, seeking donations from individuals and businesses and more are some ways to serve in this role..
